Brent
Gorton
& the Tender Breasts: A Short Biography
Brent Gorton had been doing time in far-flung Albany, NY as
a solo artist playing with a loose
affiliation of friends who would
learn his songs for whatever local show Brent had
planned
that month. Things changed when Brent meet his future
wife
Kellie and her best friend
Brooke.
When the ladies expressed a passing interest in playing music, Brent
leapt at the opening to
propose
that they become a band. They accepted, but
didn’t think it was really going to happen
until they
saw the flyers.
The band won local acclaim for their
individual sound, which could be described as a
loping
sort of British-tinged garage rock emphasizing
a stripped down
rhythm section (no cymbals, no kick
drum) and Brent’s elliptical lyrics.
Using the usual accepted formula, the closest analogy would be Talking
Heads performing Kurt Weill songs
+ “Fun House” era Stooges fronted by
Nick Lowe.
The band gained fans and confidence while expanding their sphere of
influence with shows in New York,
Boston, and a tour covering the East Coast culminating in a performance
at the Pop Montreal festival.
The Breasts then turned to recording their music, which resulted in the
“Loud Ness” album- out now in a limited
pressing of
100 copies.
The band is currently taking a break while Brent and Kellie await the
birth of their baby girl, who will
join the
group on tambourine and melodica.
